In this scenario, the trainee is responding to an active shooter event. The trainee will begin the scenario in a hallway as a lone responding officer. The trainee will observe an individual armed with a rifle attempting to kick down a locked door. It is unknown if any other officers have arrived and made entry into the building. Branching options for the training officer will allow the trainee to articulate their commands to the armed subject while maintaining situational awareness in an unknown hostile threat environment.
The training officer will select one branching scenario.
Kicking Loop (Automatic): The AS will be armed with a rifle and on a continuous loop attempting to kick a locked door in.
Hands Up: The AS will place his hands in the air. This will give the TO three separate branches to choose from.
Kneel and Surrender: The AS will kneel and surrender. TO has the option to end the scenario at this point.
Kneel and Shoot: The AS will begin to kneel and then present a firearm and begin shooting. The scenario will end when the threat has been neutralized.
Shoot User: The AS will present a firearm and begin shooting. The scenario will end when the threat has been neutralized.

This scenario will engage the officer’s situational awareness, proper use of force, tactics, and proper use of cover. When initially in the scenario the trainee should use appropriate cover and give verbal commands while presenting the appropriate use of force.
Kneel and Surrender:
Trainees have gained compliance and should start issuing the appropriate commands.
The trainee should keep their distance and use appropriate radio communication to give an update of the situation and request additional units.
Weapon Presented:
Officer recognizes that a weapon has been presented.
Uses appropriate use of force response when presented with immediate deadly force encounter.
Unit is dispatched to an active shooter event. No suspect information has been provided. The trainee has already made entry to the building and is currently in a hallway. Unknown if other officers have arrived and made entry into the building.
The TO may pause the scenario during playback and discuss how the use of cover can assist the officer.
The TO can discuss the use of force and the commands given by the officer.
Trainees should be asked about their surroundings and what they observed.
