In this scenario the trainee is responding to a domestic disturbance call where an officer is already on scene and requested an additional unit. The trainee has already made entry into the residence and is in the living room with the other officer where the couple is arguing. The lead officer will separate the involved parties in order to de-escalate the situation. Branch options for the training officer will lead the trainee to maintain proper situational awareness while keeping a safe reactionary distance from the suspects.
The training officer will select one branching scenario.
Intro: The intro is approximately 18 seconds and begins with a couple that is arguing. The lead officer is attempting to separate the parties. The lead officer will go with the female suspect and the trainee will go with the male suspect. The TO will be presented with two branching scenarios.
Lunge: The male suspect will reach behind his back and pull out a screwdriver while lunging at the trainee. The scenario will end when the threat has been neutralized.
Rush to Child: A child will enter the room behind the officers and the male suspect will run towards the child. This will end the scenario.

This scenario will engage the officer’s situational awareness, proper use of force, tactics, and de-escalation techniques. The trainee will need to recognize the dynamic situation and create proper distance during the scenario. When initially beginning the scenario, the trainee will be the cover officer.
Initial Intro:
Recognize the aggressive comments and body language.
Scanning the area for possible threats and weapons.
The trainee should create distance between them and the suspect leaving a reactionary gap.
The Trainee should attempt to use de-escalation techniques while speaking with the male suspect.
Lunge (Weapon Presented):
Trainee recognizes the male suspect reaching behind his back.
Uses appropriate use of force response when presented with immediate deadly force encounter.
Rush to Child
This option will test the trainees' situational awareness and ability to create a reactionary gap that will assist them in determining what is occurring.
The trainee is dispatched to assist another officer at a domestic disturbance call. There are no reports of violence, however, the couple will not listen to commands and are yelling. The trainee has already made entry into the residence and is with the lead officer in the living room.
