In this scenario trainees are responding to reports of a person having a mental breakdown. The scenario takes place in a bedroom. The trainee will be the cover officer during the scenario. The subject in the scenario will not respond to verbal commands and grabs a rock. Depending on the trainees use of distance the training officer will have the option of selecting from two separate branching scenarios.
The training officer will select one branching scenario.
Initial Intro: The intro to this scenario begins with approximately 15 seconds of talking. The subject will be sitting on the floor and the lead officer will be attempting to give him commands. The subject will grab a rock and the TO will be presented with two separate branching scenarios.
Aggressive: The subject will refuse to put down the rock and lunge towards the trainee. This will end the scenario.
Calm: The subject will lay on the floor and drop the rock. The lead officer will advise that he is going to place the subject into handcuffs. This will end the scenario.

This scenario will engage the officer’s ability to display command presence, have situational awareness, and use appropriate use of force. The scenario should allow the trainee to use de-escalation techniques to establish an environment of safety or compliance. Trainees should keep an appropriate distance between themselves and the subject allowing for a reactionary gap. Trainees should recognize that the subject is holding a rock.
Aggressive

The trainee should display an appropriate level of force.
Distance should be created between the subject and the trainee.
The trainee should be aware of surroundings.
Calm
Recognize that the subject is holding a rock.
The trainee should display an appropriate level of force.
Distance should be created between the subject and the trainee.
The trainee should be aware of surroundings and not place themselves at a disadvantage.
Trainee should place themselves at a position of advantage while the lead officer goes hands on with the subject.
Trainee is dispatched to a local residence where the family member states that her son is having a mental breakdown.
The TO will be able to use threat rings and demonstrate how close the trainee was to the subject.
TO should discuss situational awareness and the ability to recognize possible threats early on during a contact.
TO should discuss the importance of being aware of your surroundings and how unfamiliar layouts can become hazardous when needing to move quickly (i.e., tripping over furniture).
