In this scenario trainees are responding to reports of an attempted burglary from a woman with a history of mental illness. Once on scene the trainee will be presented with an emotionally disturbed person (EDP) pacing back and forth in her driveway. She appears to be emotionally charged and is not responsive to any verbal interaction. Branch options for the training officer will lead the trainee to use proper de-escalation techniques while maintaining a safe reactionary gap from the suspect.
The training officer will select one branching scenario.
Initial Intro: The intro to this scenario begins with approximately 28 seconds of the EDP pacing back and forth in her driveway making aggressive verbal comments. During the introduction, the TO will be able to select from two separate options.
Force: The EDP will reach behind her back and pull out a knife. The EDP will not approach the trainee and will continue to pace back and forth. This will end the scenario.
Calm: The EDP will deescalate and begin becoming compliant with the trainee. This will end the scenario.

This scenario will engage the officer’s ability to display command presence, have situational awareness, and use appropriate use of force. The scenario should allow the trainee to use de-escalation techniques to establish an environment of safety or compliance. Trainees should keep an appropriate distance between themselves and the EDP allowing for a reactionary gap. Trainees should be aware of obstacles and possible cover or concealment.
Force
Recognize the EDP reaching behind her back.
Recognize that the EDP displayed a knife.
The trainee should display an appropriate level of force.
Distance should be created between the EDP and the trainee.
Recognize the need to call for additional units.
The trainee should be aware of surroundings and not place themselves at a disadvantage.
Calm
The trainee should use appropriate de-escalation techniques.
Once compliance is gained the trainee should be able to discuss the appropriate course of action based on law and department policy.
Trainee is dispatched to a local residence for an attempted burglary call. The residence that the trainee is responding to is known for a woman that suffers from mental illness.
The TO will have two separate branches to choose from depending on the trainee’s ability to use appropriate de-escalation techniques and keep an appropriate distance from the subject.
The TO will be able to use threat rings and demonstrate how close the trainee was to the subject when the knife was displayed.
TO should discuss situational awareness and objects in the scenario that can be used as barriers between the EDP and the officer.
